Between the alleys, the old squares and the mansions, you’ll discover the historical city center, the Popes Palace, the episcopal complex and the Saint Bénézet bridge, which are registered on the UNESCO list of world heritage sites.

The Clock’s Square is the “center” of Avignon : there you will find the City Hall, built between 1845 and 1851. Nearby, the municipal theatre hosts the Opera of Avignon, and at the top of the square, you’ll see the “Golden age” carousel turning. Meeting place, bordered with café terraces and restaurants, the square is always lively.

The Popes Palace

The Popes Palace is the city emblem, and a formidable witness of Avignon’s high importance within the Christian word during the Middle Ages. Built from 1335, the Palace then became the biggest Gothic building in all Europ. The Palace tour, which includes the private apartments, is inescapable if you come to Avignon.

From the top of the ramparts, you will understand why the City of Popes has become a formidable Palace Fortress : Avignon overlooks the massive area of the Rhône plains.
