Cavaillon

Cavaillon

The town of Cavaillon

At the gates of the Luberon

Cavaillon is located at the crossroads of several roads. You will be able to travel across the region really easily, and appreciate the numerous types of landscapes.

When you walk through the town, along the alleys and the flowery squares, you’ll enjoy one of the mot beautiful synagogues in Europ (XVIIIth century), and its Jewish Museum. But there is more : you will also discover the Cathedral (XIIth century) and its small cloister, as well as the Roman arch (1st century).

Melon Capital

Cavaillon is the capital of melon. Here, this delicious fruit is the market’s king, and the merchants will learn you all their techniques to choose the best melon : weigh it, check that the tail is about to fall, and that the melon is slightly cracked at its base. This reputation is well deserved and much appreciated each season, but remember that Cavaillon is full of other charms.

The town is lucky enough to have a big green hill (St Jacques hill) at the heart of the town. A marked trail will lead you to the top of the hill, where you’ll enjoy a really nice view over the town, Apt plain, the Luberon and the Alpilles. Then, you can go back to the café terraces and shaded squares of the city center in a few steps.

An inescapable Via Ferrata

If you like via ferratas, this one is absolutely inescapable. Cavaillon is the only town in Europ which offers a via ferrata directly accessible by foot from the city center : the circuits start from the top of the St Jacques hill.

The cyclists will also be pleased : a cycle route has been marked between Cavaillon and Forcalquier (100kms), away from the big roads. You’ll enjoy a beautiful nature, some picturesque villages, in a typical Provencal atmosphere.
