Bonnieux

Perched village in the Luberon

Only 30 minutes from Cavaillon

Bonnieux is one of the perched villages. It is located on the northern side of the Luberon, facing the village of Lacoste. It is the gateway to the Lourmarin valley, only way through the Luberon, which divides it into two areas. Bonnieux is less touristic than Gordes, that’s why it has kept its entire authenticity.

Bonnieux has been a papal city for about 500 years, and the village architecture testifies the prestige of its inhabitants over the centuries.

The church of Bonnieux

First, there is the top of the church’s bell tower, which you can sight from far away. It dominates the landscape, with its height of 450m. Once you have climbed the 86 steps made of stone, you can see this Old Church, with its bell tower’s arrow perched on top of the cedar trees surrounding it. The old Church of Bonnieux fits since many centuries into the heart of its village and history. It is an emblematic building of the town.

The Philippe tower is also high up, and was built by the sculptor and artist Philippe Audibert. His real goal was to sight the see from the tower, but he died before he could achieve this project. From there, you can contemplate the Berre pond anyway.

Bonnieux gives you the chance to discover the charms of provencal alleys, but also the Bakery Museum, The Rouville Hotel, or even the Louve Garden, which was awarded as “remarquable garden”.
